LOCAL IT SECURITY COMPANY WINS NATIONAL HACKING COMPETITION

Employees have been invited to teach white hat hacking skills at international conference in Portugal.

New York, NY – Two Hurricane Labs employees, Lebbeous Fogle-Weekley and Lann Martin, have won the Capture-the-Flag Web Application Hacking Competition at the 2008 Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) U.S. Conference in New York City. The conference is dedicated to bringing together industry, government, and security researchers to discuss the state of the art in application security. The competition featured IT security engineers from around the world, competing in a “capture the flag” style contest, where each team attempted to accumulate points by hacking web servers and capturing hidden information. The competition started on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 and ended on Thursday, September 25, 2008. The employees were recognized at the end of the conference and received prize money and an invitation to teach at the upcoming OWASP’s European conference in Portugal, November 3rd to 7th, 2008.

Dan Guido from Polytechnic University developed the Capture-the-Flag competition. The competition consisted of web-based challenges of varying difficulty that called for the use of cross-site scripting, SQL injection, request spoofing, and all the usual fundamental techniques for exploiting insecure web applications. “Lann and I worked together to take the lead in this contest and to hold onto it until the end”, Lebbeous said. Lebbeous and Lann are security engineers with Hurricane Labs and have been involved in a number of customer pen test assessments.
